Why the best energy solutions aren’t always the biggest
One of the things I enjoy most about my work is seeing how a family’s energy needs evolve over time.
Recently, I had the chance to catch up with one of our long-term clients, Richard, after completing another expansion to his solar and battery system. Listening to him talk about his experience reminded me that the best projects aren’t measured by the number of panels on the roof or the size of the battery in the garage. They’re measured by how well the system fits the people who use it.
When Richard first contacted us, he wasn’t simply looking to reduce his electricity bills. Living in a rural area, his family had been dealing with regular power outages and an unreliable electricity supply. Like many homeowners, he wanted greater independence from the grid and the confidence that his home would keep running when the power went out.
Those conversations are always where we start.
Before we think about products or system sizes, we spend time understanding how a household uses energy, what challenges they’re facing and what they hope to achieve. Every home is different, which is why we’ve never believed in standard packages or one-size-fits-all solutions.
Richard’s system is a good example of that approach. It didn’t all happen at once. As his family’s energy needs changed, so did the system. We expanded the solar array, added panels to a new shed and continued to build on what was already there, ensuring the system kept pace with the way they were living.
I think that’s something many people overlook when they’re researching solar. A good energy system shouldn’t just work for today. It should be able to adapt as your lifestyle changes, whether that’s buying an electric vehicle, installing a pool, working from home more often or simply using more electricity than you did a few years ago.
One of my favourite moments came after Richard’s battery was installed. He rang me following a power outage to tell me that while the rest of the street was in darkness, his home hadn’t skipped a beat. His lights stayed on, everything continued to run as normal and, more importantly, his family had complete peace of mind.
For many people, particularly those living in regional or semi-rural areas, that’s every bit as valuable as reducing electricity costs.
What also stood out during our conversation was the importance of ongoing support. Solar and battery systems have become incredibly capable, but they can seem overwhelming when you’re first getting started. Our job doesn’t end when the installation is complete. We want every client to understand how their system works, how to get the most from it and to know that if they have a question six months or six years down the track, they can still pick up the phone.
I’ve always believed that’s what makes the difference.
Anyone can install equipment. The real value comes from taking the time to understand your client’s needs, designing a system that genuinely suits their home and being there long after the installation is finished.
Watching Richard’s system evolve over the years has been a great reminder that the best energy solutions are rarely about chasing the biggest system or the latest technology. They’re about creating something that works for the people who live there today, while giving them the flexibility and confidence to face whatever comes next.
If you’re starting to think about solar, battery storage or improving your home’s energy performance, my advice is simple: start with a conversation. The right solution isn’t the same for everyone, but with the right guidance, it’s much easier to find the one that’s right for you.
