The Impossible House: solar power, heritage rules, and the fight for energy freedom

What happens when you want to go completely off-grid… but the rules won’t let you? That’s the challenge at the heart of The Impossible House — a bold, sustainable build in Sydney’s Inner West, featured on Grand Designs Australia. And it’s one Roland Lawrence Electrical (RLE) is proud to be helping solve.

A vision beyond the grid

The Impossible House is more than a renovation. It’s a movement — one homeowner’s mission to prove you can live sustainably, stylishly and self-sufficiently, even in a tiny, inner-city semi on just 104m².

The goal?

  • Go fully off-grid
  • Recycle water
  • Use reclaimed and non-toxic materials
  • Keep it affordable and replicable
  • Make it a beautiful, liveable space — not a compromise

But when it came to solar — the cornerstone of off-grid energy — the biggest obstacle wasn’t the size of the roof or the design of the system. It was red tape.

The solar challenge: small roof, big restrictions

RLE’s founder, Roland Lawrence, designed a 7.2kW solar system with 18kWh of battery storage. It’s tight — but just enough to get the home off-grid, assuming ultra-efficient usage and clever design. But almost half the required solar panels would need to go on the home’s street-facing roof.

That’s where things got tricky.

Because the house sits in a heritage conservation area, local planning policy discourages solar panels on street-facing roofs. Even though it’s 2025 and climate-driven living should be the norm, heritage visuals still trump energy independence — at least in this part of Sydney.

Council conflict: design vs. climate reality

The Inner West Council technically allows for an additional DA (development application) to permit front-facing solar panels, but there’s no guarantee of approval. And despite months of discussion, there’s still limited recognition from council that a climate emergency might outweigh visual uniformity.

As the homeowner put it:

“If my house burns down because of a climate-induced bushfire, then isn’t the heritage conservation also at risk?”

A valid point — and one Roland and many other contractors are also pushing back on. In contrast, the City of Sydney Council has introduced clear guidelines for heritage solar installs: if your front roof meets simple design criteria and the house isn’t part of a listed group, you may be exempt from a full DA. Progressive thinking that balances design and sustainability.

The workaround: solar today, and tomorrow

For now, Roland is proceeding with the parts of the system that are council-approved. The panels going on non-street-facing roof sections will still power the home — but full off-grid functionality will only be possible once the additional panels are approved and retrofitted.

In the meantime, the setup includes:

  • Roof-mounted solar panels
  • Daytime solar inverter for live energy use
  • Battery inverter and 18kWh storage to cover nighttime and overcast days

Every watt counts in a build like this — and so does every compromise.

Solar design tailored to you

One lesson this project highlights? There’s no such thing as a “standard” solar system. As Roland says:

“Usage varies wildly from household to household. It’s not directly tied to how many people live there or what appliances you own — it’s how and when you use them.”

So RLE works closely with each client to understand the home’s duty cycle (how much energy is used vs. idle time), and design a system around real needs. That includes estimating self-consumption ratios and making sure battery storage matches usage patterns, not just averages.

People power makes progress

This project has sparked important conversations — and we hope it’s the start of bigger change. Roland and the homeowner know they’re not alone. More and more Australians want to live off-grid or sustainably — and local councils need to catch up.

If you’re in a heritage area, or just want to maximise your energy independence, this is your sign: don’t settle. Push for progress. Ask questions. Work with experts who’ll back your vision — and design systems that actually work.
